Heirlooms destroyed in fire

Family heirlooms over 100 years old were among Malcolm Shaw's possessions that went up in flames on Wednesday night when his garden shed caught fire.
The Darraghs Road resident leapt out of bed at about 8.30pm to find his shed completely engulfed in flames and fire fighters trying to contain it.

Malcolm Shaw sorts through a badly burnt chest that contained heirlooms that had been in his family for generations.

'I was in bed and was completely oblivious. I didn't realise something was happening until I heard all the racket.”
'All I could see was flames leaping up into the trees.”
Malcolm stored an old chest full of family heirlooms in the garden shed.
He says the chest and its possession have been passed down from father to son for generations.
His grandfather brought the chest out to New Zealand from Scotland over 100 years ago.
Malcolm was burning leaves in a nearby brazier earlier that day and fire fighters suspect an ember from the fire started the blaze.
'There was a hell of a downpour not long after I finished burning. I didn't think any more about it.”
Malcolm's neighbours were at the scene trying to contain the blaze before fire fighters arrived.
Tauranga senior fire fighter Rob Pinkerton says they did a very good job at containing the fire.
'I'm very grateful. It could have been a lot worse,” says Malcolm.
