A smoke alarm alerted some Mount Maunganui residents to their house being on fire on Sunday at 11.30pm.
Mount Maunganui senior station officer Lindsay Nichol says a wooden cigarette butt holder with sand in it caught fire.
It was set against a house wall on the deck, and set fire to the deck and side of the house.
When Mount Maunganui fire fighters arrived, the residents had a garden hose on the fire.
'Once again, the smoke alarm does its job,” says Lindsay.
