Assessments tomorrow

A winter of hard work is assessed tomorrow as surf life savers line up to see if they make the grade for one of the hotly contested regional lifeguard jobs this summer.

Among the hopefuls trying out for her first regional guard position is Otumoetai College head girl Mikayla Zandstra. She competes in surf life saving with the Papamoa club and is also a member of the Mount Maunganui club. She is an experienced volunteer lifeguard.
She is among about 115 applicants seeking about 65 regional lifeguard jobs available on Bay of Plenty beaches this summer.
The assessment includes a three kilometre run, a 400m swim, a run-swim-run, a tube rescue and an assessment of IRB skills.
The applicants will also be tested on first aid and resuscitation followed by an interview.
'They are all experienced lifeguards who apply,” says Surf Lifesaving BOP acting CEO Sarah Lucas.
'While some are applying for their first season, there are others who have done this job for up to 30 seasons.
'A lot of experienced lifeguards apply for the job because it is a great summer job. So this weekend is the trial throughout the country. All the trials are the same.”
They are applying for a job that involves eight hour days on the Bay of Plenty beaches over the summer peak from December 21 and finishing on February 5.
'They have been working hard over the winter obtaining IRB training, first aid training, working on their fitness and getting VHF radio certificated,” says Sarah.
