A word about language

I enjoyed reading the letter from Maureen Guy and also this week's letter from EM Izett highlighting mispronunciation of the English language.

My husband and I love being in New Zeeland, and as ‘new' Kiwis, it is mostly not a problem to have to ask some people to repeat a word up to three times until we have figured out what they are actually saying, but what fascinates us no end is the fact that here in New Zeeland the cities and towns seems to be run by speaking female horses! Surely a ‘mare' is a female horse? It can be very confusing to hear the ‘mare' said this and that and the next thing. Is the correct word not M A Y O R? Kiwi greetings.
