Angling for health

As an active path to recovery, a group of New Zealand volunteers is going to teach breast cancer patients how to fly fish in Rotorua.

Casting for Recovery is a charitable trust set up in New Zealand earlier this year to provide therapy for patients through fly fishing. The programme has been available in the United States of America since 1996, after it was noticed that the exercise involved in casting a fishing rod is beneficial to the recovery of breast cancer patients.
Former flight attendant Sherrie Feickert, who has lost many former colleagues to breast cancer, is chairing the New Zealand operation.
'The retreat is run entirely by women volunteers and as well as some of the best fly fishing coaches, we will have a range of other top professional medical and psychosocial people available as well.”
As many as 14 people can participate on the free retreat at any given time. The 14 successful applicants are chosen by a random draw.
The first retreat will be in Rotorua over the weekend of February 12-14, 2010.
Applications are now open and will close on November 15.
Application forms can be downloaded at www.castingforrecovery.org.nz
