Fresh Future Appeal underway

The 2009 Fresh Future Appeal has kicked off in the Bay of Plenty with the aim of raising money for the children's wards and special care baby units at Tauranga hospitals.

Bay of Plenty District Health Board received $65,000 from last year's Fresh Future Appeal, which is sponsored by some of the country's largest supermarkets.
BOP DHB paediatrician Hugh Lees says the hospital has lots of children admitted at this time of year with serious chest infections who may need extra oxygen to help them breath.
'With last year's money we bought oxygen monitors which allow us to carefully regulate the amount of oxygen needed, and greatly enhance the care we are able to provide,” says Lees.
He admires the Fresh Future Appeal and the commitment of local supermarket staff.
BOP DHB chairperson Mary Hackett says that it's not always possible to afford everything our clinicians need.
The special care baby units at Tauranga Hospital used some of the money to purchase vital signs monitoring equipment which support the staff in providing care for sick and premature babies.
This year the Fresh Future Appeal will run until September 27.
