Human calculator wows Bay students

It is probably an understatement when they call Scott Flansburg the ‘human calculator'.

Otumoetai College students were wowed by Scott Flansburg, the ‘human calculator', when he visited Tauranga on Tuesday, August 18.

He was able to beat a person punching in calculations on a calculator when he wowed a crowd of students and teachers at Otumoetai College yesterday, August 18.
The American maths whiz was in Tauranga promoting next week's online New Zealand maths challenge.
Scott is commonly referred to as the ‘human calculator' because he can instantly work out calculations in his head, such as cube roots to many decimal places, calculate which day of the week you were born and add a dizzying array of numbers.
He has also been on the Oprah Winfrey Show, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and is in the Guinness Book of Records as the fastest human calculator.
During one of his brilliant calculation displays for the Otumoetai College students, Scott asked one student for a three digit number and another student for a two digit number.
Scott was able to add the two digit number, 27, to the three digit number, 578, in a recurring pattern over a 15 second period.
He was able to beat a teacher who was simply pushing the equal button on a calculator by several seconds.
Scott then asked a teacher in the audience for his date of birth and then calculated the date he was born, Friday, and then the exact day he celebrated his birthday 2 years, five years and 10 years later.
Scott calls himself an ‘edutainer' and has been teaching maths and entertaining students, teachers and parents with his amazing talents for more than 20 years.
His mission is to improve maths skills for people no matter their age.
'I'm really looking forward to helping more Kiwi kids realise that maths can be fun,” says Scott.
