Jumping for joy

Greerton Village Mainstreet manager Graeme Morrissey is challenging all other mainstreet managers in the region to give skydiving a go. Graeme tried it for the first time this summer and says while he was afraid of heights, the entire experience was exhilarating once he got underway.

Graeme's first tandem skydive was exhilarating.

'I felt a little hesitation before I went out the door, but after the initial step into nothing, it was awesome. It was a clear day and I could see right across to Ruapehu and Taranaki. It was a huge adrenalin rush.”
Graeme says the staff who organise the jumps are amazing too.
'The guys are very good at talking to you and putting you at your ease.”
Graeme won a voucher for his jump at a recent Sun Media clients' breakfast and he says he is very grateful to Sun Media and Tauranga Tandem Skydiving for the opportunity.
Tandem skydiving offers jumps that vary in height from 8000 feet to 12,000 feet. They usually take jumpers for a 15 to 20 minute flight after which the freefall is made while securely harnessed to an instructor. The pair freefalls at about 200km/h for the first 5000 feet after which the main chute is opened for a canopy ride down, that lasts about six minutes.
