Beach fire time bomb

Mount Maunganui senior fire fighter Mike Williams is warning if beach fires are not extinguished properly, they are an accident waiting to happen.
'It's just a time bomb for those on the beach the following day.”

This message comes after several small beach fire callouts on Monday for Mount Maunganui emergency services.
The first was in an area of grass in sand dunes on Maranui Street at about 9.50pm and the second, about an hour later at 10.50pm on the beach near 323 Oceanbeach Road.
Mike says many beach goers simply bury beach fires with sand but believes this will not extinguish it and will simply allow it to smoulder and build heat.
Carrying a bucket and using water to extinguish the fire would be a better option, says Mike.
On Tuesday night, Te Puke fire fighters also attended a fire on a shelter belt on No. 2 Road at about 9pm.
Te Puke deputy fire chief Dale Lindsay says the fire was sparked when a power line fell onto the shelter belt.
He was unsure how the power line fell and fire fighters spent about 45 minutes dampening the blaze.
