Explosion before blaze ignites

Te Puke resident Tupaea Rolleston heard a loud explosion before he ran outside and saw power lines shaking and a bright glow in the sky on Monday.
The orange glow he could see was a large shelter belt on fire at No. 2 Road, not far from his house on Boucher Avenue in Te Puke.

Nearby resident Tupaea Rolleston sent this picture of the burning shelter belt to SunLive.

Fire fighters were called to the fire at about 9pm on Monday night and say the fire ignited when power lines fell onto the shelter belt.
When the fire ignited it burnt along an 80 metre stretch of the shelter belt and took 45 minutes to extinguish.
A number of nearby residents rushed to the scene to watch fire fighters battle the large blaze.
Tupaea was one of those who rushed to the scene and says people were coming from all directions to see the fire.
'The town fire alarm sounded. A thick layer of smoke then appeared in the sky, which is when locals drove in the direction in their cars.”
He says some people were running and others walking so they could get a closer look at the fire.
'Half the town's power was cut leaving some locals in the dark for over an hour,” says Tupaea.
