Gate Pa power blackout

Gate Pa residents looking for a quiet Friday night watching television were out of luck when power was cut to the area for six hours after a Botanical Road transformer fire.

Trustpower reported power was off from 7.30pm on Friday and restored at 1.30am Saturday.
Two fire trucks, one each from Tauranga and Greerton fire stations, attended the fire for about half an hour.
Tauranga Fire Station senior station officer Mark Keller says once the fire was out and any danger gone, firefighters left the power authority repair call-out team to deal with the situation.
Powerco corporate affairs manager Neil Holdom says the transformer was a low voltage transformer supplying fewer than 20 customers.
'The cause of the fire is still under investigation and a detailed examination of the damaged equipment will be undertaken over the next few weeks,” says Neil.
The transformer was replaced.
